In reply to your Despatch No. 228 of the

lov 29938 31st. July last, I have the honour to inform you that I have

do

ascertained that the Military Authorities only contemplate

making a confidential map, for Military purposes, of a portion

of the New Territory.

2.

In further reference to paragraph 2 of Sir

William Gascoigne's Despatch No. 259 of the 18th. of June, I

have to state that Mr. Newland who is in charge of the Cadastral

Survey of the New Territory proposes on the completion of that

survey, to compile from it and from the topographical survey

made by Mr. Tate, a general map of the New Territories on a

scale of 2 to the mile.

This map will not include the island of

Hongkong, while the portions of the New Territories which have

not been surveyed by Mr. Tate, namely, Lamma Island, the Po Toi

Group of Islands, the North shore of Mirs Bay and some of the

unimportant outlying islands will be added to it from the

Admiralty Chart.

The preparation of this map was taken into

consideration
